So many OPAS members enjoyed our 2006 & 2007 Museum Paint-In that we have arranged a return visit. One of the most delightful surprises of a visit to the Louvre is observing artists, young and old, replicating master works to improve their skills. Five Ohio museums are opening their doors to OPAS members in a similar fashion this coming January.

Due to Ohio weather unpredictability in January, OPAS has collaborated with The Columbus Art Museum, The Cincinnati Art Museum, The Dayton Art Institute and for the first time - the Toledo Museum of Art and Springfield Museum of Art to provide a closer destination to all OPAS painters. We scheduled the Paint Ins on different Saturdays to honor the request from members who wanted to go to multiple museums.

A little intimidated to try this? There is a wonderful synergy that develops when you are replicating a work in a museum. You will be surprised at how much you learn from this process!  You'll also be surprised at how respectful most museum goers will be. Yet, if you choose to, you'll enjoy wonderful dialogues with strangers. Those who stop to watch you paint will admire and respect your efforts and are usually very generous with their compliments.

The Springfield Museum of Art
Saturday, January 5
OPAS member Paul Reif hosted. He writes:

"Arrived at the Museum before 9am and two long distant travelers were sleeping in their cars."

"Urban Blight" - Paint outside or from out of a 4th floor window!

Left to Right: Robert Davitian taping down his paper while Hal Thorley paints the city outside the window.
Dianne Coppacia; J. Robert Reed; Lee Hanford; and Ray Hassard works out a composition as Gary Chaconas paints.

Hal Thorley, Gary Chaconas, Robert Davitian, Lee Hanford, Jon Browning, Debra Joyce Dawson, Ray Hassard, Karen LaValley, and J. Robert Reed were some of the artists that took part in this Urban Blight Challenge. And it was challenging! With snow on the ground, Ohio's beautiful greyness, gave way to sun and melting snow. Parked cars came and went, and not many people populated the cold streets outside. All of the above mentioned painters chose to paint indoors, from Jon's office space, now dubbed "the Penthouse". It offered a great 4th floor, bird's-eye point of view.
The first floor cafe was open for refreshments, and several painters partook of breakfast or lunch and conversation. Edie Dean stopped by to snap some photos and "do lunch".
Everyone was delighted with the quality of natural light and subject matter that "the penthouse" provided. Kudos to those artists that decided to come out and paint the grittiness of the city!

Eight hearty painters braved fog and remnants of snow for the March 15th paint out in the Cleveland MetroPark. Three of the attendees were new to OPAS, and hopefully will join us again in the future. After some coffee and muffins, we headed out to paint beautiful scenes with trees, rivers, and of course snow, then regrouped around 2:00 for a critique session facilitated by Diane Farr. The location and Lodge were so wonderful, we hope to repeat this event again.

In attendance were Deb Calix, Nancy Hawkins, Jim Polewchak, Diane Farr, Lee Hanford and (not in picture) Nancy Martin, Betty Kovacs, and John Quigley.

Update on 2008 Zanesville Art Center Exhibition from VP & Exhibition Chair John Daniels.

11:00 AM :
Keynote Speaker: Charles A. Shepard III

Charles A. Shepard, Executive Director, Ft. Wayne Museum of Art

"What Museums Don't Want Artists to Know"
Charles A. Shepard is the Executive Director of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. He has been involved in making, presenting, teaching, and introducing people to art for over thirty years. Beginning his career as the Director of the Ann Arbor Art Fair, he has been a professor of art history, senior curator and director at three university museums. He is the founder of the University of Maine’s UM Museum of Art.

Charles Shepard, Executive Director of the Ft. Wayne Museum of Art gave a Career Development Lecture followed by half-hour private critiques of members work who pre-registered for that opportunity. There were a limited number of time slots for a personal critique. These werel offered on a first come first, first served basis.

President Jon Browning writes:

The speaker, Charles A. Shepard, III, was excellent. He offered sound advice on how to market painting, and his advice was punctuated with wonderful stories about life amongst the big galleries. He also offered personal critiques for those who signed up.

The key moment of the day, though, may be that he bought one of Edie Dean’s paintings for the Ft. Wayne Museum of Art.

Yow! Hats off to Edie. Huge day for her.

Thanks to Jeff Risner for planning this paintout!

An early bird, Chuck Harris. Look at those donuts!

Debra Dawson writes: It was a pleasure to be back in this area of Ohio. The rolling hills were a great backdrop to a spring which was on steroids! The flowering trees were in full bloom, and they were a nice compliment to the fresh spring greens. The weather was great. Threatening rain in the morning, the day turned into warm sunshine. OPAS Host and Trustee, Jeff Risner, was waiting at 9:00 AM in the ARTS/West Community Arts Center with the promised coffee and donuts. He provided maps and good info on places to paint. One of the favorite locations turned out to be White's Mill. Four artists chose that spot to paint and it was interesting to see the different interpretations of the mill, which may be familiar to some of you from the years of the OPAS Nelsonville Plein Air Competition.

Not everyone returned for the 3:00 PM critique, but those that did were treated to a discussion of their work by local teacher/artist Ron Luce.

Buck Creek State Park  is one of my favorite painting locations in all of Ohio. The marina area is nestled between a hills with scrub and trees. There are two parking lots on either side of the marina that provide very good elevated views of the area although it requires a bit of driving to reach them, then there is the marina parking lot for an up close painting of the marina area. More photos of this paintout below. At left :
"Gary's Red Tent Plein Air Studio"
6" x 8", Oil on Panel, by Debra Joyce Dawson
Here's a painting of OPAS member Gary Chaconas. In his new red tent rain studio, Gary worked away on his painting of the ravine and wasn't bothered by the rain at all.

Bridgette writes :
It was a challenging day for OPAS painters. Many were there before 9:00 AM - set up and painting. We got a brief rain shower around noon, some of the oil painters painted a little longer, but those working on paper packed up and headed to Bridgette Turner's Studio & Gallery a few blocks away. The afternoon was spent eating lunch, talking about painting and viewing the current exhibition at the Gallery. There was a stack of great art books to ponder over. Give an artist a good book and there will be lots of discussions!

Members attending the paintout were: Mike Stegman, J. Robert Reed, Jeri Ellis Platt, Chuck Harris, Gary Chaconas, Hal Thorley, Elaine Freeman, Tamar Rudavsky, George Leach, Edie Dean, Debra and Martin Dawson, Tom Harbrecht, Larry and Lynn Golba, Carol Cosgrove, Andrew Mitchell, Renton Hulet, Thoma Swanson and Host Bridgette Turner.

New member Renon Hulet writes :
Hello everyone. I'm a new member and already I have felt a wonderful outpouring of
generosity and friendship with OPAS members. I attended the paintout at the ravine,
but unfortunately couldn't get there until just in time for the rain. I had just
plopped myself down in a spot only to have it turn to mud underneath me!
Better planning next time. However, I very much enjoyed our time at
the Turner Gallery. What an amazing pool of talent in OPAS.
I'm overwhelmed. Thanks to all who were so kind.
